Ascent of Mount Cameroon in 7 Days

From relaxing at beach resorts to conquering the heights of Mount Cameroon through hiking.

Experience 7 unforgettable days and 6 nights of coastal charm and mountain hikes in the vibrant cities of Limbe and Buea, nestled in Cameroon’s South West Region.

Our adventure begins in the South West Region of Cameroon, where we’ll explore the enchanting seaside towns of Limbe and Idenau. Picture yourself strolling along the breathtaking black sandy volcanic beaches, basking in the sun, unwinding in the ocean breeze, or taking a refreshing swim in the Atlantic waters.

In Limbe, we’ll discover the famous Botanical Garden, founded by the Germans in 1892, a peaceful haven of rare plants and rich history. We’ll also visit the Limbe Zoological Park, created in 1993, where rescued primates and other wildlife thrive in a natural setting.

The journey continues with a moving visit to the historic slave trade site of Bimbia, where remnants like chains, padlocks, and tools still echo the stories of the past. From there, we ascend toward Buea, a lively town at the foot of majestic Mount Cameroon, where new adventures await.

In Buea, our journey continues with an exploration of the majestic Mount Cameroon. Rising 4,100 meters above sea level, this iconic peak is not only the tallest on the West African coast but also the region’s most active volcano. Reaching its summit promises an unforgettable and breathtaking experience. Along the way, the scenery transforms dramatically, with landscapes ranging from mangroves and evergreen forests to dense equatorial rainforest, montane forest, open savannah, and rugged volcanic terrain. This diverse environment shelters a remarkable variety of plant and animal species, making Mount Cameroon a true natural treasure.

Mount Cameroon stands as living proof of an active volcano. During the hike, you’ll have the rare chance to walk across hardened lava flows left behind by the eruptions of 1959, 1999, and 2000. Reaching the summit rewards you with sweeping views over the cities of Buea and Douala, stretching as far as the eye can see. At that moment, you’ll truly feel as though you are standing among the clouds, yet firmly grounded on earth.

From there, we embark on a scenic drive to the seaside resort city of Limbe, nestled on the western slopes of Mount Cameroon along the Atlantic coast. Upon arrival in Limbe, check-in at Marcsons Hotel, where a welcome dinner will be served. Overnight stay at the hotel.

LIMBE

Day 2: Journey from Bakingili through Debunsha and Idenau, returning to Limbe (50 km).

After an early breakfast, we set out for Debunsha to visit the historic German Lighthouse and the scenic Natchigal Lake. Debunsha is renowned as the wettest place in Africa—and the second wettest in the world—with an annual rainfall of about 10,000 mm. Our journey continues toward Idenau, passing vast industrial oil palm plantations and a processing factory along the way.

On arrival in Idenau, we explore the charming regional port, a vibrant hub with stunning black sandy beaches. A stroll along these unique volcanic shores leads us to lively fishing villages, home mainly to Nigerian and Ghanaian communities.

On our return to Limbe, we pause at Mount Bakingili—often called “Little Mount Cameroon”—formed by the lava flows of the 1999 volcanic eruption. Back in Limbe, lunch awaits at Down Beach, where freshly grilled fish and braised chicken are local specialties.

In the afternoon, we visit the Limbe Botanical Garden, founded by the Germans in 1892, followed by the Limbe Zoological Park, established in 1993 through a collaboration between the Cameroonian government and the NGO Pandrillus. The day concludes with dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel, with the evening free for relaxation.

BIMBIA

Day 3: Travel from Bakingili to Limbe, then onward to Bimbia before returning to Bakingili (54 km).

After breakfast, we depart for Bimbia, a historic town situated along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, not far from Limbe. Bimbia was an important slave trade station, rediscovered in 1987, and still bears permanent reminders of this dark chapter of history, including padlocks, chains, and other tools once used by slave traders.

We will also tour the military base at Man ‘O’ War Bay before heading back for lunch at Limbe Down Beach, where fresh seafood and local delicacies await. The day concludes with a return to the hotel, dinner, and a free evening to relax.

BUEA

Day 4: Travel from Bakingili to the scenic town of Buea, covering a distance of 47 km.

MOUNT CAMEROON

Day 5: Depart from Buea and begin the ascent of Mount Cameroon, reaching Hut 2.

After an early breakfast, we drive to the Lower Farms area, situated at 1,000 meters above sea level, which serves as the starting point for our Mount Cameroon hike. With backpacks in tow and guided by experienced mountaineers, we begin the “Chariot of the Gods” trek, with our first goal being Hut 1. Along the way, you will traverse lush tropical mountain forests and open savannah landscapes. The climb to Hut 1, at an altitude of 1,850 meters, typically takes 3 to 4 hours.

At Hut 1, we take a break and enjoy some snacks before continuing the ascent to Hut 2, located at 2,850 meters. Here, you can explore fascinating mountain caves, discover unique geological formations, and capture spectacular photographs. This altitude also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding city and landscape.

MOUNT CAMEROON

Day 6: Continue from Hut 2 to the summit of Mount Cameroon, then descend back to Buea.

Early in the morning, we continue our ascent toward the summit of Mount Cameroon, reaching an altitude of 4,100 meters. Upon arrival, a wave of accomplishment greets you—the challenge of standing atop the highest peak on the West African coast has been conquered! Take time to explore the summit’s unique features, capture memorable photographs, enjoy snacks, and rest while soaking in the breathtaking panoramic views.

The descent begins along the same route, with breaks and snacks at Hut 2 and Hut 1. Upon reaching Upper Farms, we return to the hotel in Buea via local taxis. The day concludes with rest, meals, optional massage sessions, and an overnight stay, allowing you to fully recover from this remarkable adventure.
